Naha Tug of War rope

Naha Tug of War history said:
The Naha Giant Tug-of-War has its origins in the ancient Ryukyu period. Evolving from an agricultural community function into an urban event as Naha prospered as an international trade center of the Kingdom of the Ryukyus, the Naha-Yumachi-Jina ("the Rope of Naha's Four Towns") underwent development very unique to the Kingdom of the Ryukyus, with a spectacular giant rope combined with the majestic performances of the Hatagashira banners representing the respective communities. It was lugged in national celebrations such as the enthronement of a new king, and continued to be held until 1935. Discontinued by the Battle of Okinawa, the Naha Giant Tug-of-War was revived in its traditional form in 1971 to celebrate the recovery from the war, and to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the organization of Naha City, which grew in the post war era through consolidation of smaller municipalities. The event became the symbol of Naha, the city of peace.

Through the support of its citizens, the Naha Giant Tug-of-War has grown steadily each year. In 1995, it received its first certification from the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest rope in the world. It continues to flourish today as the most significant traditional event in Okinawa that we can boast to the world.
