CHATAN – At approximately 8:10 a.m. on May 26, Nicholas Christenson, 38, a contractor out of Kadena Air Base, was involved in a collision which resulted in the fatality of Isao Toriumi, 39, a motorcyclist at an intersection of Route 58 in Chatan.

In a statement to the police, the US civilian contractor believed that he was able to make the right turn toward Miyagi Coast in his passenger car. While the vehicle proceeded to make the turn, it collided with the 39-year-old Urasoe man on a motorcycle that was traveling through a green light in the opposite direction.

The impact resulted in the motorcyclist being thrown into a parked taxi approximately 30-meters away. He was then transported to a nearby hospital but was confirmed dead an hour later.

Japanese police arrested the US civilian contractor on suspicion of violating the Road Traffic Act. The charge was later upgraded to negligent driving resulting in death or injury.

An earlier version misstated the vehicle driver's military affiliation. The driver of the passenger vehicle, identified as Nicholas Christenson, 38, that was involved in the incident is serving as a contractor aboard Kadena Air Base and has been charged with negligent driving resulting in death or injury of Isao Toriumi, 39.
