Seven-Eleven Japan Co. previously stated that they would be entering Okinawa Prefecture with their first Okinawa Seven-Eleven convenience store located in the parking lot of Sun Plaza in Itoman City due in part to a joint venture with Kanahide.
Since then, there has been a shift of plans and there are now 14 Seven-Eleven stores that are opening around Okinawa on July 11, 2019, at 7 a.m. This number includes the originally planned Itoman location, some in Naha, as well as others spread over the island.
According to Seven-Eleven's former President, Kazuki Furuya, in an earlier meeting with the now previous Okinawa Governor, Takeshi Onaga, Seven-Eleven is seeking to open around 250 stores over the next five years. This number will rival and put pressure on the current number two convenience store competitor on Okinawa, Lawson, with their 232 stores, counted as of May 2019.
Okinawa is the last of the 47 prefectures in Japan to obtain a Seven-Eleven. Competitors such as Lawson and Family Mart have been in the Okinawa market since July 1997 and October 1987 respectively.
