News pertaining Okinawa.Org to include updates, maintenance scheduling, feature additions, etc.
Ironically, this site first went live on this day in 2018, and, besides describing what great features we had to provide to registered users and visitors alike on that day, not much else happened. Since then, we've immensely grown over 2019 and have experienced and shared quite a lot of unique things about Okinawa. Here is Okinawa.Org's Year-End Review: We have to start this off with our first blog post, not because it was our first, but because it'll help you navigate temples and shrines...
We're giving away a good portion of our earnings here at Okinawa.Org this week to two lucky winners, early enough to enjoy spending it on Black Friday fighting over that new toaster that you really didn't need in the first place with a random stranger at the PX. Both parties will receive a $20 Amazon eGift Card, a Navy Federal Credit Union transfer, or $20 through PayPal—whichever is the preferred method. The commenter will be selected on November 28, 2019, at 2000 and both will be...
The long-awaited (for us) Okinawa Events calendar—which completes the core of our site, Okinawa.Org—has been released! This calendar will feature events aggregated by staff from various local sources such as towns and cities, newspapers and other various places to bring you the best of things to do in Okinawa. There are several views that this calendar has to offer. While on a computer, it might be best to view the events calendar in the monthly view. This is because it is reduced in size...
Here are a couple updates that we pushed out this week to improve the user experience here on Okinawa.org's forum. Profile Covers It seems like just about every social network known to man allows you to customize your profile. We asked ourselves, "Why not here?" So, we've implemented profile covers. A demonstration of such can be seen by hovering over this account's name for a smaller view or clicking it to see the full view in the profile itself. A profile cover can be an image or a new...
Marron Matters is a series on our blog that follows Marron, our lovable adoptee from Okinawan-American Animal Rescue Society (OAARS), and her new family around Okinawa to anywhere willing to accommodate pets or where allowed. My wife, who was already interested in Marron, without showing me the picture of her, told me to visit an OAARS event on Kadena one day. Out of the many dogs and cats there, Marron immediately struck my eye and was so friendly—I wanted to take her home right away...
While we initially opened Okinawa.Org with the Okinawa Questions forum, it was formatted in a normal thread view layout. This would almost certainly make finding the best answer out of many replies impossible, for the original poster to the typical visitor coming from a search engine that is also in need of answers. We've introduced a new look and feel to this forum today. It is similar to the functionality of using Yahoo! Answers or any other major Q&A website that you may be familiar...
As of December 31, 2018, Okinawa.Org opens its doors to the public for alpha testing on early release beta software (huh?). We are asking the first members to give us critical feedback on site usage to make it a better place for all interested in Okinawa to use. This site is built on a forum base and maybe a little difficult for some to use, which is understandable as it's not a widely used format these days. Those familiar with the social media network Reddit may find navigating around a...
